Guerrero's

Most of the Apache Boulevard restaurant row in Tempe lies along the segment from Terrace to McClintock. Venture east of McClintock toward the 101 Freeway and Mesa, and good places to eat become far less common. Amid the vacant lots and trailer parks on the eastern segment of Apache, Guerrero's is a welcome outpost for Mexican food. Guerrero's occupies a modest standalone building on the north side of the street about a quarter mile west of the Price-101 Freeway / Apache Boulevard Station.

Guerrero's is smaller than many apartments. The interior has just four small tables and a battered high chair. The outdoor seating on a covered patio facing Apache is a litte larger, but not by much. Regardless of the seating chosen, the first step is to go inside and place an order at the counter. During breakfast hours prior to 11 AM, there are a dozen choices, divided almost evenly between breakfast burritos and combination plates, most featuring eggs, chorizo, potatoes, beans, and similar ingredients.

Later in the day, a broader menu covers the bases for lunch and early dinner. Guerrero's offers over a dozen different burritos and various types of tacos, flautas, chimichangas, enchiladas, and tostadas. 15 different combination plates (center photo below) arrange these items in various configurations with rice and beans. Since the food here in unabashedly Arizona / Sonora border food, expect lots of shredded, melted yellow cheese and refried beans. Although there's little that's unfamiliar here, the preparation is quite good and everything except the tortillas is homemade. Customers looking for comfort-food, Phoenix-style, will not be disappointed.

The food can be washed down with sodas, lemonade, ice tea, and horchata, but no alcohol is served. One notable item at Guerrero's is the capirotada (right photo below), a type of Mexican bread pudding that is the restaurant's sole dessert. The cup in which the capirotada is served is deceptively small because the dessert is filling. Bread soaked in a sweet, spiced syrup is mixed with fruit, raisins, and peanuts to create a dish that two can easily share after a meal at Guerrero's.

The service at Guerrero's is very informal since the restaurant is quite literally a mom-and-pop operation. All food is ordered and picked up at the counter. If a customer is waiting outside on the patio, a tap on the window signifies that the food is ready. Guerrero's is open Monday through Friday from 7 AM until 7 PM and Saturdays from 7 AM until 6 PM.
