Focaccia Fiorentina

There are two types of establishments that serve the downtown lunch trade. The first type is places like Kincaid's, which cater to diners who wish to linger while meeting over lunch. The second, more abundant type is for those who want to get away from the office but need to return in less than an hour. Focaccia Fiorentina serves the latter group by offering freshly prepared Italian sandwiches, pasta dishes, calzones, and pizza. Focaccia Fiorentina is situated along Central Avenue just over a block from the Washington / Central Avenue Station (northbound) and the First Avenue / Jefferson Station (southbound).

The sandwiches (right photo below) are made with focaccia that a has a light, slightly crisp texture, resulting in large sandwiches that contain generous quantities of meat, vegetable, and cheese fillings without being overly filling. There are seven meat-based sandwiches and two vegetarian sandwiches on the menu. The pasta dishes include penne and rigatoni dishes, along with a daily special such as manicotti stuffed with ricotta cheese (center photo below). Pizza are 10" pies designed for individual lunches. Side salads and desserts, including tiramisu, complete the menu. Beverage selections include not only fountain sodas, but also bottled fruit drinks and sparkling and still water.

In a break with its Italian theme, Foccacia Fiorentina has recently started offering the breakfast burrito menu from the defunct La Mesa Pit BBQ, which was located around the corner on Adams Street before closing in October 2007 . Curently, Foccacia Fiorentina is open on weekdays from 6:00 AM until 10:30 AM for breakfast and then until 2 PM for lunch. There are no weekend or evening hours. Still, the restaurant manages to draw quite a crowd during peak lunch hours and also does a substantial amount of carryout, delivery, and catering business.
