The Eggery

Breakfast restaurants usually seem to be cut from the same cloth: country-kitsch decor: pitchers of water at each table; familiar, homey menus; and quick, efficient service. The Eggery, located in the Uptown Plaza shopping center, just across the street from the Camelback / Central Avenue Station, is no exception. The Eggery looks and feels like a typical breakfast place, but its food is generally a step above the typical morning experience in a chain restaurant.

The Eggery's decor incorporates some of the usual country cliches, with rooster figurines on shelves throughout. Still, the tile and brass fixtures recall the days when the Eggery's space was home to the long-defunct French Corner, a popular bistro in Phoenix during the 1980's. As the restaurant's name suggests, the menu at the Eggery focuses heavily on eggs, with a dozen omelettes available, along with frittatas, Southwestern dishes, French toast, and platters featuring eggs alongside pancakes, bacon, and other breakfast favorites.

For the egg-nostic, there are also several good choices available, including a dish called "Great Grains," (right photo below) which involves either McCann's oatmeal or a seven-grain cereal combined with fruits and nuts. Pancakes are available in both buttermilk and whole wheat versions, both of which are light and fluffy and available with a variety of optional mix-ins and toppings.

Beverages includes fresh-squeezed orange and grapefruit juices, as well as fountain sodas, coffee, and tea. The citrus juices are fresh tasting, but not excessively pulpy. No alcohol is served. The Eggery is affiliated with the Good Egg, a local chain with the same menu at nearly a dozen locations in the Phoenix Metropolitan Area.
